Cleaning an Outdoor Air Conditioner

Begin by removing the cover from your air conditioner’s outside unit. You will most likely need to unscrew it, and you may require assistance lifting or prying it off the coils. Make sure to keep your screws separate. These are sometimes proprietary in size, making replacement difficult.

How to Clean Air Conditioner Coils

Before you touch the inside of your air conditioner, make sure it’s turned off and the breaker for it has been flipped. This helps to guarantee that you do not injure yourself or damage the unit. Put on gloves and remove any large debris or bits of debris. Use your vacuum’s brush attachment to gently suction off the coils, being careful not to bend any of the fins.

Finally, use an AC condenser cleaner to clean the unit. Allow this to sit for the period specified on the bottle, which is usually 10-15 minutes. Finally, use your hose to rinse away the cleaner and the filth it has removed. Use a mild setting to avoid bending the fins.

When you’re finished, put the cover back on your air conditioner.

How to Clean an Air Conditioner Filter

Most air conditioners don’t have replaceable filters. Instead, change your filter every 1-3 months, especially if you use your air conditioner frequently, if you have pets, or if your house is especially dusty. Make sure you get a filter that is the same size and shape as the old one (you can even bring it with you when you go shopping). To correctly replace your filter, follow the instructions on the package or on the unit itself.
